If you allow it; tragedy can be cleansing

Letting your tragedy be cathartic brings understanding that only you have the privilege of holding. It is for you and you alone, your journey toward healing.  It is hard to fathom that such a statement can be true, but I believe it to be so. Acceptance is the key. Understanding that you do not understand is the beginning of the journey, and realizing that it is you alone to walk. There will always be those that are there in your midst to hold you when you cry, offer words of comfort, carry you when the journey forward seems impossible to imagine. However at the end of the day it is yours, to dissect, to learn from and to let go. How to do this is as unique as the tragedy that has been laid upon you. What works for one might now be for another, the only thing that is uniform to all, is the pain and the emotions that come packaged with the catastrophe.

Sure there are certain obvious things a person can do, such as sleep, diet, exercise and lots and lots of self talk. Avoiding the issue at hand is a sure sign that you’re attempting to shutdown your emotions and believe that it will all go away if you do not think about it. Busying yourself, drinking too much, reckless actions. Not abnormal for some, but we also know, things eventually catch up to us. No avoiding is not the answer, and yes sitting in the pain and the tragedy of it is hard, but to journey through, is where you have to begin. The two big A’s in this process; acknowledgment, and acceptance. Giving the tragedy its due and eventually releasing parts at a time as your strength returns. Each morning you wake, is because you have a purpose for that day. To be the very best you can be no matter what. As hard and as difficult as that may seem it will bring you cleansing and in time healing will show its face. You will never be the same, well perhaps the same and different all at once. But instead of living in the space and time of your pain it will be in a rearview mirror. Looking back on occasion yet continuing to journey forward to all that there is for you.
